What is the Sustainability Week?

The Sustainability Week Basel (SWB) takes place annually in March at various universities throughout Switzerland. In Basel the week has been organized by unissa starting in 2019. The week offers a varied program on the topic of sustainability. Participation is free and open to all members of the public.

Team

At the beginning of each fall semester a new group of motivated students comes together to form the SWB core team. This group plans the week as a whole, ranging from organizing specific events over designing the promotional material to coordinating with partners and sponsors. All Students at the University of Basel are welcome to join this team! Furthermore, you can get Campus Credits by participating in the organization of SWB.

Skills 

A wide range of skills are needed to successfully organize a SWB. But don’t worry! You don’t have to have any experience or prior knowledge to start. We have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise and are happy to share. The SWB is the perfect place to gain first project management and event organizing experience in a supportive evironment! 

Roles

Below you find a list of typical roles present in the core team. The roles differ in time commitment and intensity. Importantly, your commitment is fully adaptable to your individual capacities and interest.
 
  • Project (Co-)Lead: Oversight of whole progress, contact point for teams
  • Program Lead:  Leading the different Event Teams. Making sure the program is set and everything is organized with the partners.
  • Event Team: Organizing specific event(s)
  • Logistics: Coordination of materials and event spaces to ensure a smooth implementation. 
  • Finances & Fundraising: Creating a budget, recruiting sponsors, accounting and billing 
  • Communiations Lead: Overview over communications team and development of promotional strategy
  • Communications Team: Design, social/print media campaign, distribution of posters and flyers, internal University communication (these tasks are not done by only one person!)

Timeline

  • September: Kick-Off 
  • October: Team building and introduction to the workflow, search for sponsors
  • November: Event planning and contacting of possible event partners
  • December: Finalizing of event shedule and event planning
  • January: Development of communication strategy, design of communication material
  • February: Promotion via print, Social Media, newsletter etc.
  • March: All hands on deck to make the hard work come to life during the SWB!

When and How to Join

Ideally, you join the SWB team in the beginning of the fall semester. However, you can join anytime during the planning phase of the SWB, we are always glad to have more helping hands!
